How to Take a Great Outfit Selfie
You do not need a photographer or a ring light. A clear, natural photograph is enough to show how colours, proportions and layers work together.
Why does Elemi ask for a selfie?
An outfit photograph gives useful context about how pieces work together on a real body. You remain in control of which photographs you add.
The mirror selfie
- Clean the mirror.
- Hold the phone around chest height.
- Step back far enough to include the complete outfit.
Getting the lighting right
- Face towards a window.
- Avoid strong light directly behind you.
- Turn off harsh overhead lights if they distort the colours.
No mirror? No problem
Use the phone timer, ask someone you trust or use the in-app camera where available.
What to show
Include shoes, layers and the complete silhouette when possible. Add a closer photograph when an important detail is difficult to see.
Common mistakes
- Backlighting.
- Cropped shoes or hems.
- Motion blur.
- Washed-out colours.
- A room that is too dark.
