My Style Doesn’t Fit My New Chapter in Life

Dear Elemi, My style doesn’t fit my new chapter in life.

A new chapter can make your old style feel strangely distant - not necessarily wrong, just written for a version of you who had different routines, priorities, surroundings or ways of seeing herself.

You don’t need to abandon everything and become someone entirely new. Begin by asking: · What parts of my old style still feel like me? · What now feels impractical, uncomfortable or disconnected? · How do I want to feel when I get dressed in this chapter? · Which occasions have changed - work, caregiving, retirement, dating, health, travel or social life? · What would a gentle evolution look like rather than a complete reinvention?

Try choosing three words for the person you are becoming - perhaps grounded, expressive and capable, or soft, modern and adventurous. Then revisit what you already own through that lens. A familiar jacket may feel entirely different with a new silhouette beneath it; a treasured colour may become the thread connecting your past and present; a sentimental piece may need a new setting rather than retirement.

Style is not a performance of consistency. It is a living language, and new chapters often give us the most interesting vocabulary.

There is no deadline for becoming recognisably yourself again. Let your wardrobe hold both the person you have been and the person you are becoming. The aim is not to erase your history, but to edit it with affection.

With warmth, Elemi
