How Can I Look Polished When I Never Have Time?

Dear Elemi, I’m busy, and I don’t have much time to think about clothes in the morning. How can I look put together without making getting dressed another job?

Start with an outfit you already know feels good. You don’t need to come up with a new combination every morning. Think of the pieces you reach for when you’re in a hurry and still feel like yourself in them - perhaps comfortable trousers and a favourite top, or a dress and shoes you can walk in.

Then add one finishing touch. A cardigan, scarf, jacket or pair of earrings can make familiar clothes feel more considered. Choose whichever is easy and suits the weather. There’s no rule that says you need to add more layers or accessories than your day calls for.

It can help to keep a photograph of a few outfits that have worked for you. On a rushed morning, you can look at one and get dressed without starting the decision all over again.

Most importantly, check how the outfit feels when you move. If you’re tugging at it, worrying about your shoes or planning when you can change, it isn’t making your morning easier.

A reliable outfit, one detail you enjoy, and the freedom to get on with your day - that’s enough. Looking polished doesn’t have to take all morning.
